Painting/Recycling
When I moved into my apartment, I ended up with a mountain of cardboard. Since moving from the US, I no longer had any furniture, appliances, bedding, cookware, anything. While it was exciting, expensive, and stressful to buy everything again from scratch, I ended up with an unexpected problem. My apartment building didn’t let me put my cardboard next to the recycling, all of it had to fit inside the one bin dedicated to the entire building (which, as you can guess, was always full). In comes creativity. I decided to cut up all the boxes into canvases. This helped me to loosen up my painting as I was essentially just making paintings on trash. It didn’t feel like I was “ruining” an expensive canvas. With this freedom from preciousness came a boom of creativity. I painted everything and anything. I tacked it on the wall, since I had no decorations and my apartment still felt shockingly empty.
